Social Media and Mental Health

Image
Social Media and Mental Health Image Source: Giphy The first article I read was the  Help Guide s article called Social Media and Mental Health . This article talked about the importance of social media, how it can effect someone negatively and how social media can be a positive influence on people when not overused. What I loved about this article was that it gave great breakdowns for positive and negative uses of social media, other causes of unhealthy social media use, signs that social media is impacting your mental health, modifying social media use to improve mental health, and ways to help a child or a teen with unhealthy social media use. The reading was very interesting but it did not make me think in a new way, what I will say is that it enhanced what I already knew and gave great examples for ways to handle social media both positively and negatively. One thing that did stick out to me was this image below. The image stuck out to me because if someone was just scro...

Reflecting

Reflecting on Ed Tech  Image Source: Giphy This week is week 8- the last week in the semester for this class, I'll be honest, it flew by.  Let's talk about how I feel now about Technology in Education Honestly speaking, I feel indifferent. I truly believe that technology is the future but I also am a little "old school" in the sense that I love not always having to use technology. I am definitely on the borderline of loving it but not depending on it. I will say it comes in handy, it is super interactive and pretty user friendly for students which I love, but, what I would like to shy away from as an educator is becoming dependent on technology. I do feel that technology is so important for students with learning because its a tool that they can utilize anywhere technology is available. There have been numerous times I have heard my younger students tell me that they use the same apps they use in school at home, and that makes me so happy that they continue their le...

Personal Data Mining

Digital Tattoos Image Source: Giphy This week I did a deep dig into the internet about myself but before I actually did the search there were a couple of thoughts that I had that I wanted to be sure to jot down first and reference back for a reflection at the end of this blog. Thoughts: 1. I don't think much will come up for me because I don't use social media very much, will this be true? 2. I do wonder what information comes up for me when I search my name, how much of it will be accurate? 3. I wonder how many "Jillian Roman" or "Jillian K Roman" there are that will pop up that are not me Doing a deep dive:  For reference these were searched in both Chrome and Safari. I chose websites that I knew of and that I had never heard of being curious to see what is really out there about me and curious to see if it was even right.  Google: So when I searched google for "Jillian Roman" a bout 5,390 results  appeared in 0.54 seconds  & "Jillian K...

PLN & Twitter

PLN & Live Twitter Chat Image Source: Giphy Let me start off by saying how extremely intimidated by this assignment I was. I use social media at like the bare minimum anyone can use it so when the assignment said to create a twitter account and then participate in a live chat I honestly was over it before it even started. Intimidation immediately took over. Now, I have a twitter account, used the account, but can't honestly say I will ever use it again (but then again who knows), however, the assignment was completed and it wasn't as bad as I imagined it to be. The hardest part? Well finding a live chat, participating in it, figuring out how twitter worked, responding to people, retweeting them, it was a whole lot. I had no idea where to start.  Questions I had at the start of the live twitter chat? 1. Why is this relevant? 2. How do I find a chat? 3. Will people even respond? 4. How quick does this happen? Answers I had at the end of the live twitter chat? 1. Its relevan...
